Working at the Animal Shelter

A little bit about what I do

Hello Lovelies,
Just wanted to blog a little info about myself and why I created True Mineral Earth.
Many of you have asked me what I do for a living. I'm a painter by day and I work at an animal shelter at night. My passion is art and I see art in everything! My night job allows me to fund my art and pay the bills. You can find my artwork on Instagram and on Etsy.
First off, if you don't know already, I'm Sarah Ashley, the founder of True Mineral Earth. I created this space to discover alternative ways to health care and products that are affordable. I strongly believe that your health is so important and making healthy choices to your everyday products is essential and should be easy! I want to use my blog as a platform to help people learn what to look for when buying products, the best deals and inexpensive alternatives, and of course DIY's! One of my main goals is to help people increase Eco products in the home without breaking their bank. Plus making and creating your own products is fun!  I love to create so it just makes sense that I would make my own products (:
Not only do I love creating DIY products, I absolutely love to create art! I'm focusing on watercolors at the moment and I'm just amazed how therapeutic it is. You don't even need to know how to paint for these benefits. Ultimately, you can just play with water and the paint creating washes of color that gives a soothing effect. Who needs therapy when you have watercolors to use for mental clarity?

I went to school for Art and graduated from California State University of Channel Island where I received my B.A. in Studio Art with an emphasis in Painting. I worked full time while I was attending college part time. Working for the Animal Shelter paid my way through school and still is such an amazing job.

Working at an Animal Shelter is hard work. It can be super fun but it can also be sad. You learn about so many different animals. We welcome any animal that comes through our doors, whether it is a domestic animal, livestock, or an injured/orphaned wildlife animal. Many people do not realize what a vital role shelters play. I love informing others about all of the many ways that shelters can help!

For wildlife we call our local wildlife rehabbers and they pick them up from our shelter and rehab them before sending them back out into the wild. They are non profits but they are in desperate need of donations. We are so thankful for all the wildlife rehabbers that take in our animals when they are brought in.

I've had and continue to have so many amazing experiences working at the shelter. In the  summer I am usually part of the Mobile Pet Adoptions with my shelter. We call these MPA's. We go to parks, zoos, and fundraisers in the masses adopting out animals along side of other animal organizations and rescues. There are usually about 1000 animals at these events. If you love working with animals I would recommend you to check it out at your nearest shelter and volunteer!

Below are just some of the fun moments I wanted to share!

Benefits of Himalayan Salt Lamps

Have you ever wondered what is so beneficial about Himalayan Salt Lamps?
Picture
To start, these pink salt lamps neutralizes electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices.
To understand we need to first address positive and negative ions. These ions directly affect us throughout the day.
An excess of positively charged ions in your environment is believed to contribute to tiredness and a lack of energy, tension, anxiety and irritability. Positive ions in the air have even been investigated as a contributing factor for asthma and depression.
Positive Ions have a negative affect on your health and can cause respiratory problems such as asthma, poor immune system. These ions are so small they can be absorbed within the air that you breathe.
Positively Charged Ions
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of energy
  • Tension
  • Irritability
  • Asthma
  • Depression
  • Lowered immunity
Negatively Charged Ions
  • Positive mood
  • Eases stress and anxiety
  • Purify's the air
  • Helps with asthmatic symptoms
  • Promotes quality sleep and restfulness
Reported Salt Lamp Benefits
  • Reduces stress
  • Reduces allergies
  • Less colds and flu (due to less airborne viruses)
  • Purifies the air
  • Helps keep healthy vibration and energy
  • Reduced symptoms from disorders like rheumatism and arthritis.
  • Supports the Immune system
  • Neutralizes electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices
In the reported health benefits of Salt Lamps column, I just wanted to address that there is not a lot of scientific research on this, however it is proven that salt lamps are natural negative ionizers. These claims may be contributed from the Salts ability to neutralizes electromagnetic radiation from electronic devices.
Electronic devices are constantly around us throughout the day and the night. These devices are exerting positive ions into our environment. As seen above positive ions can have a massive impact on our health. there are many ways to keep a steady flow of negative ions to rid yourself of this tiresome cycle.

My kitty Zorro loves the warmth of the Salt Lamps. Just make sure your animals are not interested in licking the salt!
Interesting info I found
Salt attracts water molecules from the surrounding air. A large block of rock salt, like a Himalayan crystal salt lamp, is especially attractive to water vapor and its attached pollutants.
As Himalayan salt lamps slowly becomes saturated with water vapor they attract from the air around them, the heat from the lamp inside dries them, for as long as the light is on.
This heat also re-releases water vapor back into the air. Importantly, any airborne contaminants attracted to the salt lamp remain trapped there and will not become airborne again.

To be completely honest you can never have too many salt lamps. keep them in rooms that you are the most active so they can purify the air that you breathe. We have about 6 at our place and always are on the look out for more. One salt lamp in the home will not purify the whole house, but it will help.
Directions on how to clean and how long to keep salt lamps on
According to this website that I have been addressing, you want to leave your salt lamps on for up to 2 weeks. After the two week mark or sooner let the lamp cool for at least 1 hour. As far as cleaning goes, you want to get a rag and dampen it with just a little amount of water and wipe the surface of the lamp. If you think about it, all the positive ions and pollutants in the air are on the surface.

I know when I first received my lamp I wanted to lick it because it was funny and it's Himalayan Salt so its healthy right? After reading this I wont be doing that anymore hahha!!!
Leave a comment below of how Himalayan Salt Lamps have helped you or if you have any questions
Thank you,
Sarah Ashley
